Sabine Lisicki Delays Comeback: When Will the Wimbledon Finalist Retire? (2025)

A tennis legend's comeback story takes an unexpected turn!

The 2025 tennis season has been a thrilling ride, especially on the WTA Tour, with some iconic players making their long-awaited returns. Venus Williams, a legend in her own right, made a comeback in July, thrilling fans with her presence at the Washington Open and beyond. Similarly, Petra Kvitova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, returned to the courts this year after a year-long break due to the birth of her first child.

But here's where it gets controversial...

A former Wimbledon finalist, Sabine Lisicki, who was all set to make her comeback after almost two years, has decided to delay her return. Lisicki, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2013, had planned to play in a WTA 125 tournament in Mallorca this week but has withdrawn, stating that she's not quite ready yet.

Lisicki's last appearance on the court was at an ITF event in Dubai back in December 2023. She had hoped to return to action a year after giving birth, but it seems she's taking her time to ensure she's at her best.

In an interview with RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland, Lisicki shared her thoughts on retirement, saying, "I haven't thought for a second about ending my career because of my pregnancy. I want to retire on my terms, at a time that feels right for me. I don't want external factors to dictate my retirement."

She added, "I put a lot of pressure on myself. I'm ambitious and driven, and I'll know when the time is right for my comeback."

So, what does the future hold for Sabine Lisicki? Will she make a triumphant return to the courts soon? And this is the part most people miss... Lisicki's journey to the 2013 Wimbledon final was nothing short of remarkable. She started with two straightforward wins, then knocked out the 14th seed, Samantha Stosur. In the fourth round, she achieved the biggest win of her career, defeating the defending champion, Serena Williams, in an epic three-set battle. She went on to beat Kaia Kanepi and Agnieszka Radwanska, advancing to the final where she faced Marion Bartoli. Despite her best efforts, Bartoli proved too strong, and Lisicki fell in straight sets.

What do you think? Is Sabine Lisicki's decision to delay her comeback a wise one? Should she take her time to ensure she's at her peak, or is it time to make a full-fledged return? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
